FEATURED ARTIST: Karen Hale

When/ how did you discover your talent and decide to become a full-time artist?
My father was a commercial artist and my mother taught us all the home arts so I was surrounded by art from an early age. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and producing art pieces. When my husband went back to school at age 27 I decided to take my talents to the streets and participate in art festivals in order to support our family. It has grown from there.
How do you define your style of work?
My style is contemporary, abstract in feel. Unlike some abstracts, they have a focal point that draws the viewer in. He or she can then travel through the painting and come back to the beginning; much like a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
What artists have influenced you, and how?
I have always enjoyed the impressionists although that's not what I'm emulating.
What challenges have you faced as an artist?
Through the years I have changed my mediums at least 7 times. Some of it was due to a fading of interest by the public and some due to my restlessness as an artist and the need to continually grow and change. Making those changes was a little daunting at first until I got into the flow. That's not to say that all my efforts were successful but I am tenacious. I have been a working artist for about 40 years so have seen many ups and downs of the business.
What is your opinion of the status of abstract art today?
Abstract art is stronger than ever. I see it in advertising, magazines, movies, and in television. Since it is so readily in the public eye, the acceptance is greater. The competition is getting keener also.
What advice would you give to a fellow abstract artist just starting out?
I suppose my advice would be much like anyone else's in that you have to have patience, diligence, and give yourself permission to let it happen.
